piranha and peacock bass?

August 24, 2009 - 1:05 pm

right now i have a 2 inch red belly piranha with two plecos in a 29 gal tank, it looks lonely and i was wondering what would be a good tank mate? i was thinkin peacock bass?? bcuhz they are both from the amazon. well tell me what you think..
thnx

Definitely not. That Red Belly needs at least a 150 gallon tank and will get around 12" long. They need to be in species tanks with other Red Bellies, they’re not strictly shoaling fish but will be less shy in groups.

That tank is approx 7-8ft x 3ft x 3ft

A Peacock Bass needs a minimum of 150-200 gallons and is not compatible with the Red Belly. Just because they both originate from the same bit of the world, doesn’t mean you can chuck them in a tank together, your tank does not replicate the hugeness of the Amazon river!

I would say this peacock is about the same size as a 29g without the water almost:

Common sense!!

No. I believe your red bellies are gonna grow out of that 29 gallon. And peacock bass easily get 12 inches, probably more. That would not work. Fish dont get lonely, well actually schooling fish do. And thats what your piranhas are. They need to be in groups. And a larger tank.

Just because they look lonely, doesnt mean you should put in a fish that wont even fit into a 29 gallon tank when its an adult in there. Especially one that eats other fish. If you give them the size of tank they need, Im pretty sure that the peacock bass will outgrow your piranha and eat them.
