Where can I find this South America trip?

September 30, 2011 - 7:29 pm 3 Comments

Me, my husband and my 14 year old son want to go on a trip to South America, starting at Rio de Janeiro, followed by a cruise up the Amazon, then to Machu Picchu - or the other way round.

Is this possible as a package holiday and where can you book it?

Hi Rachel,

I am sure there are travel agencies that can put a tour together like this, but it’ll cost you a lot of money. A more affordable way to do it is on your own, and much more fun.

Take a boat from Belem in Brazil to Manaus (5 days). You can either sleep on deck in a hammock or book a cabin, spend a few days in Manaus, and then continue to Tabatinga (6days) in the very eastern part of Brazil. You can take a speed boat from the town of Leticia in Colombia (across from Tabatinga) to the city of Iquitos in Peru, and it’ll take about 14 hours.

The city of Iquitos in Peru is only accessible by boat or plane. Book a flight from Iquitos to Lima, and another flight from Lima to Cusco (gateway to Machu Picchu). When you fly into Cusco take the first flight in the morning from Lima. Reason is that Cusco is very often fogged in late in the morning, and it is extremely difficult for the pilots to fly into Cusco under these conditions.

In Cusco book a tour with a local travel agency to Machu Picchu, which is typically a combination of taxi and train to the town of Aguas Calientes, which is located on the foot of Machu Picchu.

Have a great vacation.

i want to start longboarding…?

September 14, 2011 - 10:04 am 2 Comments

First, I’ve never been on a skateboard or a longboard, I’m good on skates and heelys, so i want to step up the game and start riding on a longboard,

what kind of board should I get as a new person? I’m 5′3 and 108 pounds.
I’ve been looking at this, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindless-ML3000-Hunter-Complete-Longboard/dp/B003AN4CM6/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_1

I’m not wanting to spend anymore than £80

I only want the longboard for cruising on, I have no interest in learning tricks, I want it to be easy to go around corners and easy to go in a straight line and I also want it to be quick.

also is it easy to learn long boarding? I want a board that is going to be easy for me to ride since I don’t want to fall over a lot ^_^ lol

thanks for any help.

if you want to go around corners easy try a cruiser board, they are less expensive, go to nhsfunfactory.com and look at the santa cruz cruzers, they are great quality, and just cool lookin

Organiser for Power Adaptors, Computer & Audio spares and leads?

September 12, 2011 - 5:27 am 2 Comments

I work as a musician, sometimes on cruise ships, sometimes on land and need to organise all my adaptors, spares and leads etc….so I can access them at home but travel with them easily.
The bag I have at the moment was originally a make-up bag, and is great as it has removable sections and is transparent. It’s now far too small :(

Can anyone recommend anything that [A] Had allot of different pockets (pref all with zips & hopefully removable) [B] is soft…not a hard case, so it can be packed in a suitcase [and C] is transparent (on the inside compartments).

Hope someone can help…I’ve scanned ebay, amazon and just about every other website out there, but can’t find anything suitable :(

Any help would be much appreciated…it doesn’t have to be intended for this job and I’m really not worried about colour :D

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Matt

I’m not a musician, but I’m a hardcore geek; I travel a lot for work and I carry a lot of gear with me.

I would suggest that you don’t want one big organizer. Several smaller ones will pack a lot better than one big one.

Quite a while ago I found some mesh bags, "travel organizers" made by Eagle Creek. Alas they’re no longer made/available, but they have a similar product. They’re not exactly transparent but you can see what’s in them through the mesh.

I don’t think you’ll find what you want in organizers with transparent pouches. My experience is that the transparent plastic soon wears and tears. The nylon mesh seems to last much longer.

So, no exact fits, but I’ve linked some ideas below.

Which one of these longboards would be a good fit for me?

PROFESSIONAL CAMERA UNDER $250?

September 6, 2011 - 3:02 pm 8 Comments

i REALLY need a professional camera that can take AMAZING pictures! Since
great ones are very expensive i am thinking of buying a used one on amazon which
should be alot cheaper so dont be afraid to do one that is a little more expensive. I am
very interested in photography and in one weeks time i have a carribean cruise which
is the perfect oppertunity so i need one by then!!!!
thanks so much!

Almost any camera can take "AMAZING" pictures, it has more to do with the photographers skill and experience.

By "professional", I assume you mean one of them "big, bulky, black cameras" also called a DSLR. If you have never used one before, the chance of you learning how to use it to take "AMAZING pictures!" in a weeks time will be slim (and the last I heard, Slim was leaving town today).

You will also need some lenses, and depending on what you are taking photos of will determine which lenses you need.

For $250-$350, you might be able to pick up a used entry level (or a 7-10 year old professional grade) camera. check your local camera shops or craigslist.

How can I add cruise control to my manual 95 cavalier?

September 2, 2011 - 6:42 am 1 Comment

How can I add cruise control to my 95 cavalier with a manual transmission. I need an after market kit that will disengage the cruise if I shift out of gear without using the clutch. Do i need some sort of RPM monitor to do that? A list of parts needed and where i can get them would be great. Oh and can i just put an OEM switch from a donor car to use as a control switch. Will it also control speed up and down by 1mph like a factory car install would? This is the switch I want to use. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004B2EYXM/ref=asc_df_B004B2EYXM1654044?smid=AUFHYW2XQPDOF&tag=nextagusmp0399893-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395105&creativeASIN=B004B2EYXM

you might have to rig something like a throtle lock idk what to do thats if its not computerized

Choosing the right longboard for me?

August 22, 2011 - 11:45 am 1 Comment

I’m looking into getting a longboard but have no idea what board I should get being that this would be my first board. I’ll mostly be cruising around town and want a board that is smooth and one that takes turns nicely.

I found one that I’m considering on buying.

Looks like a pretty good board. Surf One makes pretty good longboards so you shouldn’t be disapointed. Also has good customer reviews. Lastly its a good price.

Can I bring guns into Peru?

August 20, 2011 - 9:13 am 2 Comments

I am going to Peru on a cruise through the Amazon River, with stops at villages. I need to bring in a couple of rifles (for self-defense and permitted hunting) and (not mandatory) a handgun.
I am coming from the USA.
@Brendan Van Son
1. I AM NOT AMERICAN! I AM RUSSIAN!
2. I do not always need guns.
3. Why ‘answer’ if it’s not really an answer?

You need to contact your nearest Peruvian Embassy to find out what arms you can take into their country and what permits you will need.
