peacock bass and tank size?

October 27, 2009 - 1:22 pm 4 Comments

hello, i just got a brand new 60-75 g tank with 3 1.1inch peacock bass i think there either mono or ocilles pbass. I hope that tank could last them a while. i have a 450G tank but its filled with snakeheads and huge jardinis. what do p-bass crave and love to eat so they grow faster?

*HUGE QUESTION: what kind of enviornment do they like? the one i made for them has live and fake plants and african wood and plenty of hiding spots. (for some reason they still dont move around they stick right next to the heater for hours)

TYVM for ure great responces!

If the Cichla are Ocellarus, your 450 will not be large enough. I believe the World record is around 38 pounds. These guys are pursuit predators, meaning, they lock on to their prey and chase it until it’s caught. I caught a few of these in the Amazon and as a game fish they are very exciting. As an aquarium specimen they are not without their problems, voracious appetites, large tank requirements and a generally boisterous attitude just for starters. There’s a fellow in Chicago that keeps a few in a 900 gallon tank, that seems to do pretty well, you might try getting in touch with "The Greater Chicago Cichlid Association". The guy’s name was Milo as I dimly recall.

Is there a particular knot, and test line that works best for fishing for peacock bass with live shiners?

October 25, 2009 - 11:07 am 4 Comments

Been getting a lot of strikes with 3 inch shiners on no @ hooks..Line keeps popping though..I may land 40% of the fish I hook..Embarassing…New to S. Florida..Love these Peacocks!

I don’t know how line shy the peacocks are, but try heavier line. Does the line break at the knot? Try the improved clinch knot, but double the line before tying it. It should keep close to 100% tensil strength. Is your drag set properly?
Good luck!

Is it legal to keep a Peacock Bass in California?

October 6, 2009 - 6:06 am 1 Comment

I know that it is illegal to keep game fish in an aquarium such as largemouth bass and bluegills. Since peacock bass is a game fish (but not in California) I wonder if it is legal to keep one.

I searched the California Department of Fish and Game and found nothing prohibiting the keeping of the Peacock Bass. This may be due to the fact that this is a Tropical fish that would have little chance to establish itself in California Waters. That said, this has not stopped California form banning the Piranha when ALL documented evidence shows they could never establish in California water either (believe or not, the water gets too cold in the winter in CA).

I would recomend writing the CA Dept. of Fish and Game just to be sure.

peacock bass info…..?

October 3, 2009 - 7:23 pm 1 Comment

i have a 3 inch peacock bass in my 55 and i want to know some info on them i wanna hear from u i can read on a site i just wanna the real stuff thanks

Well…
They like to hide when they are small for maybe a cave-thing is good
They like to eat live food (Crickets! or cichlid pellets)
Bigger the tank, the better
Feeding in smaller amounts several times a day instead of a large quantity once a day will help keep the water quality higher over a longer time. All fish benefit from vitamins and supplements added to their foods.
Tank Temp: 75 - 82° F (24 - 28° C)

And i guess thats all i really know :P Good luck!

Can I keep a 5" peacock bass, 4.5" red devil, and Green Terror together?

September 29, 2009 - 8:07 pm 3 Comments

Thinking about getting a peacock bass (Cichla ocellaris) and a red devil (Amphilophus labiatus) together with my Green Terror (Aequidens Rivulatus)……..

Michael,

You can keep almost anything with anything if they have enough room, but in a home aquarium I don’t know of anything that a red devil will get along with (even other red devils).

If you decide to try, at least have some alternative option such as telling the fish shop you might bring them back or another tank, because when they don’t get along they really let you know it.

Are peacock bass out of season now?

September 17, 2009 - 11:11 am 1 Comment

i have been calling every single fish store in houston,tx they all say they wont have them for a couple of week. Are they not in season or something if u know were i can get one i houston please tell were.

you can order one online from liveaquaria or aquabid.

peacock bass tend to shut down in winter season if they are wild caught, as peacock really dont do well in cold water and in miami where they run wild, they dont usually feed during the cold months.

peacock bass info……….?

i would like to have some peacock bass info i have a baby one in my 55 gallon so i would like to know something about them thanks!!!!

Well first off, I hope you’re planning a tank upgrade! These fish grow big and, in a traditional cichlid fashion, they do it fast! Especially if they’re on high quality food. It will very quickly outgrow your 55g!! If you don’t have at least a 250 gallon tank in the pipeline I would suggest rehoming this fish before you find yourself with a monster!

please help! peacock bass has ick!?

September 13, 2009 - 1:17 pm 2 Comments

Hello all. So my peacock bass was doing better from when i changed the water in the tank….he is eating as usual and looks healthy….but this morning i woke up and go check on my fish and i notice he has little white spots on his head and on his fins. Also a little on his body.(looks like salt on his body) It is not severe but i want to treat it before it gets that way. The other day my brother got a baby peacock bass and it got ick very severly so he bought quick cure.. I put that in today but i just wanna know if someone can tell me the best way to get rid of this ick….my temp dropped 4 degrees from last night and is now at about 74. I heard this could be the reason the ick infected him….Im going to buy a heater tomorrow and bring the temp up to about 85 and keep using the quick cure….will this get rid of the ick? If not what is another method i should try to get rid of it? Also just because my fish has ick does that mean he wont eat? Thank you in advance! Please help!
Well i am goin to first try putting the temp up to 85 and try the quick cure….i am reading that it works well…The instructions say to remove the carbon from the filter….i have a overhang filter with the filter cartridges….how do i remove the carbon from this type of filter? should i just take the cartridge out? Thank you

the best way that i have found to take care of ich is by increasing the water temp to about 86*F

Add aquarium salt,

And a product like jungle buddies ich clear.

The reason you increase the water temp is that it will makethe parasite go though its lifecylce faster. the heat makes it mature faster.

Aquarium salt will help eliminate them. They are a freshwaterparasite so the salt will help them die.

And i use the jungle buddies product because it helps against secondary illness and helps eliminate the problem.

Remember peacock bass live in warm water. when i was in miami fishing for them, the guide told me that they need the warm water. The reason why they dont make it in northern florida is because the water temp is too low.

Remember they come from the amazon so they can handle warm water temps.
