How big do Peacock Bass have to be to keep in Florida?

January 3, 2011 - 6:44 pm 1 Comment

My goal is to catch and mount one of these some day, they’re so pretty, but I don’t know how big they need to be.

Licensed fishermen in any part of Florida may keep a maximum of two peacock bass per day, per license and only one may be longer than 17 inches

how to catch a peacock bass?

December 26, 2010 - 2:25 pm 7 Comments

i wanted to know if i can catch it with a banjo fishing lure. i cought a peacock bass in my lake with a shinny silver and blue lure, but i lost it. so if you have any tips to give me to catch one.
thanks

Where the hell is Josh when you need him to answer a question. Me personally, I do not, repeat do not believe the Banjo Minnow scam. Josh does.

If these peacocks of yours are of any size, I would stay away with the Banjo Minnow. Big peacock cichlids have been known to break rods and strip the gears of even the most durable baitcaster. They’ll rip the hooks off a surface popper. Small ones will spool you just as quick. If they can obliterate a hard wooden lure, they’ll destory a soft plastic just as fast.

It’s shame there are none here in Southern California.

How do I train my peacock bass to eat dry foods?

He is about 1.5 to 2 inches right now.

Do not feed it far a couple of days then give it dry food but remember it will need live food eventually.

Can i put a peacock bass in my current tank?

December 18, 2010 - 9:20 pm 2 Comments

i have a tank with 7 cichlids at the time and they are all africans except for one jack dempsey and i dont want to be told you cant mix the two kinds because they get along great! my local fish store has a small peacock bass and i was wondering if i could add him to my tank. someone told me the PH is different but i wanna know if there is anyway i can do it because i really like this fish. please help :)
Peacock bass (Cichla sp.) come from the Amazon river so they require a pH which is somewhat lower than what the other fish want. Other than that, peacock bass make for poor aquarium fish. Amazonian cichlids often eat any other fish they can fit in their mouths. This is especially true of peacock bass, which tend to have very aggressive natures. This causes a potential problem for expensive tankmates, especially since peacock bass tend to outgrow other popular aquarium fish. Also, peacock bass require large tanks upon reaching adulthood.

Freshwater fishing rods that will hold up to 15-20 pound peacock bass?

December 16, 2010 - 7:27 pm 4 Comments

I have been stocking my backyard canal with peacock bass for 3 years now, and i have peacock in there that easily reach 20 pounds, im afraid to use my bass rod and i was wondering what rod and reel for freshwater would hold up to these monsters, yesterday my friend hooked a big one and broke his saltwater rod.

Must have been a really big peacock or your buddy didn’t know what he was doing. I’ve not fished for them in their native land, but I will at least once before I die and from what I’ve seen on TV and youtube videos, they can be had on very heavy bass tackle.

For instance, a big peacock could very well be handled on a extra heavy seven-foot-eleven Gary Loomis Nine-Fifty-Seven Swimbait Rod that’s rated for twenty-five to sixty pound line and four to ten ounce lures.

Other heavy and extra heavy rods like the one above would work well. My top of the line Shimano Crucial Swimbait Rod could probably handle one extremely well.

Can I keep 2 teacup stingrays and 2 peacock bass in a 135 gallon aquarium?

June 16, 2010 - 7:27 pm 4 Comments

Not on the bass. The rays could survive in the tank, but not optimally. The problem is the 135 gallons are only about 18 inches front to back. The Teacup gets at lease 15 inches in diameter (not counting the tail) with some getting larger than that, with the tail length totaling up around 30 inches. The bass gets up to about 20-30 inches! As an adult it could not even turn around.

Note: The rays are not Motoro rays. They are a different species, Potamotrygon Reticulata. The Motoro is Potamotrygon Motoro.

The 135 could house two juvenile rays for some time, but a wider tank is needed for the sub adults to adults. You want a minimum footprint of the tank being about 72" by 30" or more. The 135 gallon is 72" by 18". A 180 gallon is better being 25 inches front to back. A 300 gallon is one of the better tanks to get as a standard is 30 inches front to back.

So, the tank is just too narrow front to back to optimally house either fish for life.

what time of day is best for peacock bass fishing?

May 23, 2010 - 3:44 am 4 Comments

i want to go fishing tomorrow in my neighborhod canal for some peacock bass. I go all the time but i want to know around what time odf the day is the best time of day to fish for them. any other tips would help alot . Thanks ! :)
Pretty much all day. Mornings and evenings would probably be your best times to go, but afternoons are good too. If you watch peacock bass videos on youtube, you’ll see guys catching them in the middle of the day. As for tips? Use heavy tackle and heavy-duty lures, a big peacock bass will tear apart and knock the piss out of standard lures.

And peacock bass are nothing like largemouths. They are a whole ‘nother species. Peacocks are a cichlid, largemouths are a sunfish…
