what is the deal with wireless travel routers?

June 3, 2010 - 12:25 pm 4 Comments

I am going to my nans house, and they have no internet. I was thinking of buying a wireless travel router like this :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WGR101-54Mbps-Wireless-Travel/dp/B0007SQEQY
how do they work? can you plug it in and go or do you need an access point for it to feed off?.
(e.g. BTHomeHub-21F7)

That particular model; is just a very small router, ethernet to wireless.

For the "no internet" situation, there are routers which take a 3G wireless mobile dongle, or which take a Sim card for mobile broadband

The MiFi from 3 is a prime example - maybe some of the others have similar 3G to wireless system

Alternatively, for a single machine, just get a pay as you go dongle - shop around and look up network coverage.

Where can I buy ebooks travel guides for Lonely Planet?

May 26, 2010 - 10:50 am 1 Comment

Hi, I’m using ebooktravelguides.com to search for ebook versions of Lonely Planet travel guides, but which bookstore shall I buy from - Amazon or direct from Lonely Planet?

If you follow the link on ebooktravelguides.com for Lonely Planet you have a choice of buying guidbooks or phrase books from either Amazon or Lonely Planet direct. If you buy from Amazon, you must have an Amazon Kindle Reader. If you buy from Lonely Planet, I think you can read them on a few different readers such as Sony, BeBook, Nook etc.

Where can I buy ebooks travel guides for the Rough Guide?

May 23, 2010 - 3:44 am 2 Comments

Hi, I use ebooktravelguides.com to buy ebook versions of the Rough Guide for my Amazon Kindle. But does anyone know if I can buy Rough Guide for the Sony Reader?

Kindle vs Sony Reader

Sony Reader is one of the cheapest Ebook reader. But they dont have a good selection of books and also they are much more expensive.

Kindle is definitely an amazing device. Its worth the money. You can put ebooks/notes/audio books on your kindle also Notes and annotations are very easy to make.Very easy to use with the PC and the Mac Kindle is very straight forward there’s no need for additional software required for Kindle. Also supports you can also increase the text size which is again amazing.E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and less harmful. There are wide range of books on kindle many are free and other are cheaper at price than the actual books so yes I have saved a lot of money till now.
You dont have to carry now all those heavy actual books, kindle is so light weight which is carrying almost 1500 books within it. Since I travel a lot I really like the 3G Internet you can get the internet wherever you go. Whenever you are tired of reading you can also you Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning feature which is jst so relaxing. If the small size strains your eyes a lot than can also change the text-size. I must say Kindle is a small magic books really I cant live without it.

How long does it take to get to the amazon river from Rio de janeiro?

May 20, 2010 - 4:03 am 3 Comments

I’m planning to travel to Brazil, and my destination is going to be Rio de janeiro, but I want to go to the amazon river for an adventure. How long does it take to get to the amazon river from Rio de janeiro?

Also if you guys have any tips or advices on how to spend two weeks vacation in Brazil, I’d really appreciate it. I’m interested in beaches, camping and hiking. Do you think Rio de janeiro have all that? I never been so I don’t have any ideas.

It’s about 5 to 6 hours by plane from Rio to the Amazon region, often with a layover in Brasilia.

You can either fly inland to Manaus, or visit the mouth of the Amazon River in the city of Belem, which would also give you a chance to visit Ilha de Marajó, the largest freshwater island in the world (nearly as big as Switzerland). If you go to Manuas, be prepared for a big city, which you’ll need to get away from if you’re interested in seeing the wildlife.

There is a lot to do and see in Rio (Corcovado, Sugarloaf, Ipanema, etc), but I’d also suggest either going a couple hours north (by bus) to Búzios (great beach), or a couple of hours south (by bus) to Parati, which is 300-year-old fishing village at the edge of the Atlantic Rainforest, surrounded by dozens of islands. It’s one of my favorite places in Brazil.

If you want to camp/hike, you should also check out Ilha Grande, which is a few hours south of Rio. It’s off-limits to cars, and there are about 100 miles of trails for hiking. Very cool.

Have fun!

Know any medium size travel backpacks with locking zippers?

April 26, 2010 - 12:19 pm 1 Comment

I’m traveling to Ecuador for a month with a Spanish class. We’ll be out in the the open (Amazon river basin, mountains, flat-lands, beech, etc.) for up to eight hours at a time. I need a backpack that can hold a Canon Rebel, extra lens, a notebook, and some other random small things… I would prefer it to be waterproof… does anyone know where I can find something like that?
Any suggestions?

Does anyone know where I can find a Duo glider travel system?

March 25, 2010 - 12:08 am 2 Comments

I have found some but everyone that I come across is out of stock. Anyone know where I can find one at? I have looked everywhere on the internet including Amazon.
I want it to be a double stroller.
Are all Graco carseats considered Snug ride?
I want it to come with the Car seat.

You’re going to need to purchase the car seat separately if you don’t already have one. Graco doesn’t sell most of their double strollers with car seats like they used to because they can make WAY more money selling them separately.

Canadian resident needs a bank account based in the US to conduct business on amazon.com is it possible?

March 13, 2010 - 6:33 am 1 Comment

Amazon.com requires me as a Canadian resident to have a US based account so that I can accept payments. Is it possible to open such an account without having to travel to the US? If so what bank may be suggested??

Bit of a tricky one:

As you probably know the US banking system is quite parochial.

You’re best option would probably be to find a Canadian bank with branches in the US: but I’m afraid I can’t suggest any myself.

Failing that HSBC would certainly be able to set you up but I’m sure such an account would have quite heavy fees.

Which travel books is better: Fodors, Moon or National Geographic Traveler?

January 17, 2010 - 8:39 am 3 Comments

I am going to travel to one Central American country, need a book with local hotels, restaurants, roads and other points of interest listings.

Amazon has these four: Lonely Planer, Fodors, Moon and National Geographic Traveler. All about $13-$17.

Which one is better?

Lonely Planet!!! By far the best travel books. I have tried them all and I have been to different locations in the far east, europe and south america, US and Hawaii also.

You can also take these books out the the library or buy slightly used copies on Amazon. I have done that too.
