What is resin (material) exactly?

June 26, 2010 - 3:16 pm 2 Comments

I am purchasing a gift for someone online
http://www.amazon.com/Moose-Design-Antler-Lodge-Decor/dp/B001BCRJ8W/ref=sr_1_65?ie=UTF8&m=A3M7TJ4SZA1T6S&s=generic&qid=1259527713&sr=1-65
and i was trying to figure out what the item was made out of because i dont want it to be some cheap material, so i found out that it is made out of resin…i was doing some research and it seems like its some sort of plastic or something??? i just dont want the gift to look tacky…can anyone tell me exactly what type of material it is (is it better than your everyday type plastic?)
so its a type of wood? yeah i was reading something about it coming from plants…

Resins are found in tree sap as mentioned above, but the resins you are talking about are synthetic resins. There are hundreds of kinds, but basically they are dense, easily molded plastics. Both cheap curios and expensive works of art are molded from them, just like glass, so you have to look at more than what your gift is made of. The piece you provided a link to is certainly a cheap tourist piece, not a work of art. But that doesn’t mean someone wouldn’t like it. That would depend obviously upon the individual to whom you intend to give it.

Cast Iron Skillet… Is this a good deal?

June 23, 2010 - 4:24 am 8 Comments

I am thinking of purchasing a Lodge Logic 12-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

What are pros and cons of cast iron?

Will it fit in standard oven?

never, never, never put cast iron in the dishwasher. There is a seasoning (oil) that needs to stay on cast iron which helps it not stick and keeps it from rusting. A dishwasher uses detergents which will actively remove this coating.
In fact, there are disagreements over whether cast iron should be washed with soap or detergent at all. We just use hot water usually. Only once in a while do I use a little Dawn on the sponge.
And make sure you dry it right away or it’ll rust. Just put it on a low burner or in a warm oven ’til dry.
No matter how you decide to clean it, don’t let it air dry.
As to whether it’ll fit in the oven, yes. This one’s only 12" plus the handle. That’s the normal for a "larger" frying pan.

The care and upkeep is the drawback. They are also heavy. I suggest you go to Walmart and try to lift one if there is any reason that weight is a physical problem for you -arthritis is the only thing I can think of right now.

They cook beautifully. That is their main positive. The heat is evenly distributed. Just don’t cook on anything more than medium heat on the stove top. I’ve never used them in the oven, but I know they cook well in there too.
Once one is seasoned correctly and is kept seasoned (there should be instructions on how to do that), it’ll last generations- literally, I’m using my grandmother’s set and will pass them down to my sons if they want them- and maybe if they don’t. I’m not sure if my grandmother was the first in the family to use them or if they came down from someone else.

Anyone use Grill Pan before?

June 19, 2010 - 7:18 pm 2 Comments

http://www.amazon.com/Lodge-11-2e25-22-Round-Grill-Pan/dp/B00006JSUD/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Is it better than use indoor electric grill? would it work fine at a gas range? beside the grill mark, would it taste different than regular pan?
is it true you don’t need to put oil on grill pan unlike regular pan?

Grill pans are awesome!!! Like any pan or grill, you should always spray it with some cooking spray so that your food doesn’t stick. Your food will definitely taste a lot better because you will get that char grilled taste.

The only thing about using these grill pans, is that you need to make sure your kitchen has a good ventilation. What I do is heat up the pan on high until it’s ready to go. Then I spray the pan put my meat on the grill pan and lower the temp to medium heat. This will help cook your food evenly and reduce to smoke if any.

What is the name of the tv show of this description? (need urgent help)?

Hi, I’m sitting at a kitchen table trying to order a birthday present over amazon.com, unfortunately my mother is trying to remember the name of a television series which came out in the 1980s (or 70’s, she does not remember). So she can possibly track it down and purchase it on the internet.

This is her description:
Set in san fransico. It was about a group of gay friends. One of them lodged in a house with Mrs. Mengle?…and that’s about it…Please help since my battery on the laptop only lasts an hour.

P.S
Please don’t put this on failblog

i dot know "full house"

I REALLY need opinions on my story! It’s pretty short, 3 par. and easy to read! Please help?

Take a minute or two to read my story below. This isn’t the final draft, but I’m turning this draft in tomorrow and I want someone else’s opinion on my story. Is it good? Horrible? Over dramatic? Boring? Interesting? ANY ANSWER is appreciated, don’t be shy!

I believe that we were born to be here in this time, this moment, this place. This was easy to believe as I stood gazing up at the most spectacular display known to man, something we have all stopped to see at some point in our lives, something that has roused a resounding and brilliant sense of awe in all of us. Perhaps the fact that we were finally there, in the sweltering, muggy Amazon rainforest, teeming with life and a stunning sense of adventure, had already inspired us all. Maybe this was true, but I think the reason we students and teachers alike stopped in our tracks was the fact that, for most of us, we were truly seeing the night sky for the very first time.
I had rushed through many places and events in my past, but there are times in all of our lives that widen our eyes to the fact that yes, this moment is real, and it is our purpose to enjoy it. For me, it was seeing the stars — an unexplainable number of tiny lights, the stretch of varying shades of brilliant turquoise and faded white we call the Milky Way — that kept me entranced. I’d never seen anything like it; maybe in pictures taken by NASA, or in a Space documentary I saw on Discovery Channel. But of course, no picture can match the feeling of standing where I stood then, on the banks of the Tambopata River in the Amazon jungle, no lights to dim the sky but the ones so far above me. It truly was as if the earth had stood still, just for a moment, a moment that I could drag on forever as long as I simply stood there and kept looking up. No words were exchanged between any of us, the thirty some people standing there for ten, maybe fifteen minutes — it didn’t matter — all of us feeling the exact same way: insignificant under such a vast, endless display of lights, and amazed into silence. Well, that’s how we tried to describe the feeling afterwards, when we finally picked up our bags and headed off to the lodge to sleep. But very soon we gave up trying to find words to exchange; we fell silent as we stumbled through the dark lodge, without electricity, trying to find our rooms, knowing that conversation was pointless when we were all, for the moment, thinking the same thing.
I tried to remember what exactly had caused the prolonged pause, the group of us slowing to a stop and losing ourselves in the silence, spellbound by our own thoughts as we looked up at the sky. All I could remember was thinking that I didn’t really care about the mosquitos eating me alive as I stood in the sand, temporarily forgetting about how tired and sweaty and hungry I was. I could have laid down in the sand, leaned against my backpack, and fallen asleep; that’s how long we stood on the banks of that river. Because rarely before then had I considered that maybe I don’t stop enough, just to be there, in the moment, at that time, in that place. Maybe I worry too much about the past, regretting, or maybe I worry too much about the future. When did regret get me anywhere? When did worrying about the trivial things help me out in the end? At some point, everyone realizes how foolish it is to constantly look ahead. Because occasionally, if you just stop for a moment, however briefly, and look, you’ll be able to see the stars.

Thank you for reading ~ Please take the time to answer! =)
ylime - oh…sorry if I didn’t put this in the description… this is a Personal Narrative writing assignment for school. Not a "story". :)
I believe that we were born to be here in this time, this moment, this place…
Your opener got my attention. Very good opener.
Then you veered off the path. Do I have to travel to the Amazon to see stars..is this what the Amazon offers?

Amazon rain forest, teeming with life…..what kind?

turquoise and faded white we call the Milky Way — that kept me entranced. I’d never seen anything like it…..nice construction. I began to see what you saw.

we gave up trying to find words to exchange; we fell silent. ..hmmmm nice, nice.

I tried to remember what exactly had caused the prolonged pause… Hey! you wandered again! Great flow, here! ..but.. What exactly had caused the prolonged pause??

Maybe I worry too much about the past, regretting, or maybe I worry too much about the future. When did regret get me anywhere? When did worrying about the trivial things help me out in the end? At some point, everyone realizes how foolish it is to constantly look ……..
hmmmmm! you are doing it again! You have opened a very intriguing door for me and then shut it….tell me more about yourself, here. Why are you at the Amazon basin

if you just stop for a moment, however briefly, and look, you’ll be able to see the stars…Wow! Where would that put me if I read more?

You have talent as distant as those stars..and as close as their light.
You need to stand on the banks of "self" and take a moment to see the stars in you that I do…sometimes we stumble through a darkness looking for stars..like yours. :)

I have a cast iron corn stick pan, any ideas other than corn sticks, I can use it for?

Its this same one

Just wondering what else I could create using it. Its a sad little thing that rarely gets used =)
Thanks all
Wow Kyle, I didn’t know that. So nice of you to share that KERNEL of information =P
what would you think of this recipe and adding a link sausage into the center of the "stick" and covering with the batter?
http://www.copykatchat.com/showthread.php?t=20854

I have the same ones that were my g’mothers, and then my mom snagged them back and hung them on her kitchen wall. Well, that’s nonsense, as I USE them…….

The sausage trick is a GREAT idea, just cook the sausage first. And you might want to "measure" the sausage, if you’re talking sausage links, I’ll bet you can fit two in them…..pour some batter in, then the sausages, top with more batter and then to go "over the top", sprinkle with some grated Pepper Jack cheese. AND SEND ME 2 OF THEM WHEN THE COME OUT OF THE OVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;))
