what is the deal with wireless travel routers?

June 3, 2010 - 12:25 pm

I am going to my nans house, and they have no internet. I was thinking of buying a wireless travel router like this :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WGR101-54Mbps-Wireless-Travel/dp/B0007SQEQY
how do they work? can you plug it in and go or do you need an access point for it to feed off?.
(e.g. BTHomeHub-21F7)

That particular model; is just a very small router, ethernet to wireless.

For the "no internet" situation, there are routers which take a 3G wireless mobile dongle, or which take a Sim card for mobile broadband

The MiFi from 3 is a prime example - maybe some of the others have similar 3G to wireless system

Alternatively, for a single machine, just get a pay as you go dongle - shop around and look up network coverage.

You plug it into a RJ-45 (standard ethernet) wall jack, like in a hotel, and it broadcasts a wireless signal you can use on a laptop.

    Hi,

Wireless Network Adapters can pick up ALL signals within 200 yards of your laptop.

    Overstock has great ones: http://www.overstock.com/search?keywords=Wireless+Network+Adapters&rangemaxprice=25&searchtype=Header

That have some pricier ones, but we have four of these. They work great.

You would be better off to buy a 3G USB PAYG DOngle for use at your Nans.

The Travel Router is for Hotels and requires a LAN Port to work.

You could always see if anyone in the area has Wifi and might allow you to use while visiting.
