The Sarcophagi of Karajia belong to the Chipuric archaeological complex, part of the Chachapoyas culture that dominated Northern Peru from the 11th to the 15th Century AD.
The sarcophagi are 48 kilometers northeast of the city of Chachapoyas..
and stand out for their cliff side location and the unique methods used to inter the dead.
They appear in groups of between 4 and 8 human figures, joined at the hip, all leaning with their backs to the cliff..
The sarcophagi consist of two parts, the head and the torso, which contains the funeral capsule and a human body in the fetal position.
The head is crowned by a headdress or decoration, and each has a face with a forbidding expression. Together these sarcophagi are known by locals as the Purunmachos, which means old, uncivilized male bosses.
