i want a peacock bass and want it with my oscar… will that work

Well, Yeah it can be w/ your oscar… But NO, you can't put it in a little 75 gallon tank… those things can get up to 3 feet long… Get a 300 gallon tank or bigger and then you'll be just fine.

How do I travel from Port Of Spain to Guyana?

June 29, 2009 - 6:34 pm 2 Comments

Is there a boat from Port of Spain to Georgetown? I would also consider Port of Spain to Caracas but it seems that Venezuela is an unstable country right now. If a flight is my only option, what is a good website to check out? I have six weeks to travel from Trinidad to the Amazon…has anyone ever undertaken the trip before?

Are there really cannibals in the Amazon jungle?

June 29, 2009 - 6:34 pm 17 Comments

Because my mom is from peru and she said in one part of the amazon there is a gated area in which tourists are prohibited to go in where there are cannibals.

Yes, there are.

What do I do if my bird is choking?

June 29, 2009 - 6:34 pm 4 Comments

My newly adopted orange-wing amazon is the cutest little fuzzball of feathers. She will chirp for me to come and when I do, she descends to her food bowl and demands that I watch her eat her pellets. Today however, she decided not to dip the hard pellets into water before eating. She bit off more than she could swallow without grinding it to smaller pieces and began gagging. Her body was quivering and she was pumping her neck trying to regurgitate the chunk (and this was not love regurgitating, she was really having trouble with the food). I started freaking out not knowing what to do but thankfully she upchucked the piece. She bit off another huge chunk and the whole ordeal ensued once more. sometimes she would be able to squeeze it down, and other times, I just prayed that she would be able to get it out safely. This really made me think… what if the food was really lodged in her throat and her life was in danger? Is there a bird Heimlich maneuver I could do to save her?

You must talk to your veterinarian about this. He would know how to "Heimlick maneuver" your bird, and what you can do before it's too late.

I would consider buying smaller sized pellets, or this scary situation might happen again. By pellets small enough for a Love bird, or Conure. Those should be small, but not too small that he couldn't eat it, and not large enough to lodge in his throat.

I'm sorry that you had to go through that, very VERY scary situation!

Can anyone recommend good trips into the Amazon operating from Manaus?

June 29, 2009 - 6:34 pm 3 Comments

Particular places we should try to visit? Good tour operators? How long a stay in Manaus is optimum do you think?

I would try to make contact with http://ecoclub.com/amazonat/ and see what they can offer as I may sound as tourist as well, since I'm not a local. Even though, being once in Manaus and surroundings for 15 days I would say that isn't enough and talking to friends that stayed there longer it seems quite a real experience if you try a boat journey from Manaus to Santarém or reach Pico da Neblina National Park flying to São Gabriel da Cachoeira (you will be also on the way to Venezuela and then to its National Park with the Angel Falls). If you want more hints from local people don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck and good trip

Has anyone any bad (or good) experience of a South American tour operator called "Amazon-Andes Peru"?

I´ve only had good experience of south america, but I´ve never heard of a tour operator called "Amazon-Andes Peru" even though I´m from Peru!

Here´s a web-page from Peru (you might find something interesting) http://www.peru.com

How much do drinks cost in Peru?

June 29, 2009 - 6:34 pm 1 Comment

So I'm going to Peru for nearly three weeks. Amazon river cruise, Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Lima, Iquitos, all the great spots. I am wondering how much drinks cost. How much is a beer? A pisco sour? A glass of wine? A bottle of wine? Knowing this would help me budget my trip. An answer in soles would be great, as I can always convert that to American dollars later. Thanks!

Congratulations! You've chose the best selection of peruvian destinations!

Iquitos is a fun city and very hot so you are going to drink a lot of beer there. They have their own brand (IQUITEÑA) a less cheaper than brands from Lima (PILSEN, CRISTAL & CUZQUEÑA) and also tastes OK.

Iquiteña and Pucalpina would cost S/. 3,50 a 630cc bottle
Pilsen, Cristal & Cuzqueña would cost S/. 4.00 a 630cc bottle

In fancier places the prices would rize in S/. 1.00 to S/. 2.00 more

When youre at the jungle lodge a beer could cost S/. 8.00

PISCO SOUR

Some places serve it simple (red wine glass) others double (Whisky glass). be sure that the foam is no more than 3/4 an inch thick, otherwise tell the waiter to make it again.

A double Pisco Sour could cost from S/. 12.00 to S/. 16.00 the good news is that you don't need many. There's a peruvian Quote: "Pisco Sour (double) is like a womans breasts, one is too few and three too many!"

WINES

Peru only has 2 wines worth trying: TACAMA's Blanco de Blancos (white) and TABERNERO's Fond de Cave (red). Unfortunately they cost as much as many competitive Chilean - Argentinian wines. Any of these wines would cost in a restaurant S/. 60 a bottle or S/. 8 to S/. 10 a glass

In the supermarket you can buy these same wines at half the price

If i feed my peacock bass less often, will it grow slower?

June 28, 2009 - 5:35 am 3 Comments

I dont want it to grow too fast.
Maybe once every other day, I've read.

Why do you not want it to grow fast? It will grow at the rate it’s genetically programmed to, do you have it in an indequate tank? Peacock Bass are big fish and will end up big fish no matter how you feed them. Under feeding will result in a starved fish.

Read here regarding feeding regimes:

If you don’t have the adequate housing for this fish, rehome it.

would any of you travel the whole Amazon?…?

of course making stops in the various countries that are in its very grip..? why, why not?

I traveled 1,000 miles up the Amazon. It is a very worthwhile adventure.

Why would a loving God create the candiru?

June 28, 2009 - 5:34 am 7 Comments

"This fish is also known to attack humans and animals and swim into an orifice (the urethra, anus, or vagina). Because of spines protruding from the fish, it is almost impossible to remove except through surgery. Though there have been documented candiru attacks on humans, there is no evidence the fish can survive once inside a human. The danger for the person lies more in the infection and shock that results from having the organism lodged in sensitive tissues for an extended period of time than from physical damage done by the actual fish itself."

Basically, this creature seeks to claw its way up the very sensitive urethra or vagina or anal openings and tries to make itself at home. For males in particular the surgery and complications can be pretty traumatic.

Why would God create such an abomination, which could conceivably cause great harm to an innocent person choosing to urinate in the Amazon river?

My goodness, you didn't have to get quite so exotic to make your case. What about the black widow spider or the black mamba or spitting cobra. How about the tiger and lion. When mankind fell, the whole order of creation was marred and became hostile.
